California cannabis doctors often make medical cannabis patients the primary focus of their practices. (The same is not true of California cannabis attorneys.) That doesn’t mean they don’t have any specialized training, necessarily; it simply means the Medical Board of California does not license physicians by specialty or areas of practice. In short, the term “cannabis doctor” most accurately describes a doctor’s customer base.
Any California-licensed doctor can make a recommendation for medical cannabis, which is NOT the same thing as a prescription for an FDA-approved medication. However, many physicians and specialists are unfamiliar with the research on medical cannabis, not to mention its use as treatment for specific ailments. Many doctors are also fearful of being targeted by law enforcement, insurers and/or the Medical Board, even though California’s medical cannabis laws provide legal protection for recommending physicians.
What does that mean for you as a patient? It means you can freely discuss the medical use of cannabis with your primary care physician, and that same physician can make a written recommendation for medical cannabis without fear of prosecution or loss of license. In the real world of revolving-door medicine, however, many patients may not be comfortable discussing their cannabis use with their primary-care doctor, assuming they even have one.
